Entry #7

Culture is a great part of every nation. Living in the United States we most likely have the most mixed set of subcultures out of all the countries in the world. Ever since the early hopes of the American dream, people from all over the world have wanted to live in the U.S. Immigration have always played a big part of our establishment of a country. If it weren’t for the influence of the Native Americans, early colonist may never have become so dependable on things like corn and potatoes. An example of a norm that we here in the United States would be tipping someone who helps/waits on us. We also have a very large and diverse set of flavors all coming from different cultures from all over the world. Along with food influencing culture, there’s also the impact the united states has put into other countries. Our country practices basically every religion found in the world, along with subcultures which have formed from the mix of all these cultures.

One way I can better society through culture is being able to be more open to new traditions and ways of lives those in other countries live with. One way I could potentially hurt society through using culture is by spreading lies about our countries subcultures or allow stereotypes to dictate my view of one nations culture simple minded rather than being open to the fact that we have different circumstances building different cultures.

One way society could better me by using culture and subculture would be something along the lines of allowing society to stop spreading negativity about other races and cultures through media. One way society could potentially hurt me by using culture is almost the same, if were aloud to keep having our opinions influenced by things we see on tv rather than in real life, it may lead to unfair assessments of cultures much different than my own.

Hypothetically this could be changed by starting to educate children and adults on a more regular basis of other countries, rather than let them live in fear of each other constantly.

I decided to show this silly looking video because it shows some things that both the United States and European countries see differently from eachother.

1) What would be a good example of what culture would be?

2) What causes the society of one culture to be better than that of another?

3) Are subcultures important to the shaping of a nations culture?
