Week 6 entry 10

Today we talked about some of the sociological and psychological theories for types of developments. We also watched a video that showed us an experiment about baby monkeys and the way their socialization differed from being raised with a doll made of wire versus a doll made with what looked like carpet. It was interesting to see that the monkey was more comforted by the clothed doll. After the video we discussed how family is the most powerful part of socialization. After discussing that we talked about how social media or mass media has a major way of influencing the way people’s socialized behavior can be affected by it. Many people get completely consumed by their devices, making it extremely hard for them to interact with people in face to face situations. This later in life can become a huge problem, especially if you’re looking to find your significant other or possibly have children.
Then we talked about resocialization and how it affects inmates. I believe that the way American jails/prisons are set up is a clear reflection as to why there’s so many inmates who are reentered into the system. It isn’t set up as a way to rehabilitate someone, where it’s more of a way to cage a monster who’s waiting to be released.
One way I can potentially help society would be to have a rather long and elaborate role set so I can help better society. One way I could potentially harm society would be by expecting gender roles to be part of my relationship with my fiancé. Just because cooking isn’t “manly” doesn’t mean that I should do it every now and then. One way society could possibly help me would be if we stop belittling people for their opinions based off of factual statements with basic and completely incorrect information. One way society could possibly harm me would be if allowed media to influence my views of people based off of race or sex.
One way we could potentially stop the number of returning inmates by instead of keeping criminals in tiny cells, putting them in more appropriate living situations so they feel human. Hopefully that would be a step in the right direction into boosting how they view themselves, causing them to want to better the outcome of their future.
1) Does family have to be your actual family, or someone close to have them have a direct effect on their socialization?
2) How can the effect of gender roles be worked on?
3) Why are prisons more focused on punishing people for their crimes, rather than the reformation of inmates?
I chose this picture because the caption is about a boss saying how no prison is big enough to hold a boss because he’s in one side and out the other. Which in my eyes was him saying because he has money there’s not a prison with enough guards for him to not pay off.
