Tim Schultz-Leach

Journal entry 5

Week 3 9/13/18

Have you ever wondered how all the information you find online or in books is obtained? Thanks to many researchers, enthusiast and professionals, many of us are fortunate enough to not have to run the experiments or surveys. Most information is already seen through and laid out for us, after scientist have used many scientific methods to obtain this information. Using both quantitative and qualitive data, they can summarize their findings in a way much easier for the everyday person.

Something I can do to better society by using scientific methods would be to collect my own data, whichever way suitable, and imply it to my everyday life. For instance, if I move to a new area, I may need to shop at multiple locations to figure out who has lower prices for the goods I’m purchasing. Something negative I could potentially do to society by using the scientific method, would be to use my male perspective as a way to generalize an entire population, if I only used male subjects in my experiment or survey.

One way society can benefit me by using the scientific method would be developing new ways to study and analyze different types of DNA. One way society can potentially hurt me with scientific methods would be by not gather sufficient evidence which may cause for a wrongful stereotype of an experiment.

1) What makes the scientific method so important with society?

2) Why are majority of experiments for one side versus the other, leaving the data usually bias?

3) Which type of data has less chance of variables ruining the results?

I decided to use this video because it shows you how the steps of the scientific method work. Even though its brief, it shows you what order to use and how to keep your research going.

One way we can hypothetically change the world would be by allowing all scientist and researchers the ability to communicate and do their research together, no matter wha the cost. As long as the better good of humanity is put forth, price shouldn’t be what causes things to not be developed
